Public Cloud Adoption Rates Skyrocket

Ronda Peoples / March 2, 2015

RightScale, Inc.’s, 2015 “State of the Cloud” Report reveals that public cloud adoption is on the rise, with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure leading the pack. RightScale surveyed over 900 IT professionals working in companies in a range of sizes and in a variety of industries. Here are some of the key findings from the study:

  • 93% of the survey respondents either employ or are experimenting with Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS)
  • 88% of the surveyed companies are using a public cloud; 63% are using a private cloud (many use a combination of both)
  • The majority of respondents using a public cloud solution have chosen AWS (57%); the runner-up in public cloud adoption is Microsoft Azure (12%)
  • While public cloud adoption is growing, the survey shows that private cloud adoption essentially has stalled, although it continues to be a major part of many IT environments

One noteworthy takeaway identified by Keith Ward in his recent article for Virtualization Review is that, although the majority of enterprises running more than 1,000 VMs in the cloud currently are running in a private cloud, during the next year, there will be a 14% increase in the number of these enterprises that choose to host these large workloads in a public cloud environment.
